Building an inclusive RSE curriculum: a 6-week programme for KS3 and KS4

Since the RSE guidance has been implemented, we’ve seen an increase in schools asking for support crafting their curriculums.

We understand that every school will deliver RSE slightly differently, depending on many factors: timetabling, capacity, teacher confidence, budget etc. More than ever, schools are under a huge amount of pressure to deliver a lot in a short space of time. Especially considering all of the catch-up learning that young people need after the pandemic.

We thought it would be helpful to share what a Split Banana 6-week RSE programme would look like for Year 7s to 11s.

We’ve used the government guidance as a baseline, but have made sure to include missing content that we think is essential: learning about pleasure, understanding that different kinds of sex (e.g intercourse and outercourse) are equally valid as long as consensual, knowing where to access LGBTQIA+ options for contraceptives (e.g dental dams) and more.

This curriculum is designed to be made up of 1-hour sessions. However, it can be adapted to different contexts - for example, you might be a form tutor teaching RSE in small snippets across the week. It’s made to be flexible and work for you - in your context - whilst meeting the government guidelines and expanding on them.

We’re sharing a simplified sample with you. If you’d like to see a more detailed breakdown, you can book a free 20-minute consultation with Matilda to discuss your school’s needs.

We exist to support schools and young people with quality, inclusive RSE. There are a number of ways we can help you:

  • You might like to sign up for our consultation service to get access to an in-depth curriculum framework, lesson plans and 1:1 support tailored to your context.

  • You might be keen on getting trained to feel confident and capable delivering sessions like these themselves.

  • You might like us to come in and deliver RSE workshops to your groups of young people. We have a team of skilled facilitators who can deliver workshops in a variety of settings to groups of different sizes.

We’d always love to hear from you on hello@splitbanana.co.uk.

Our work is informed and guided by the International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education.
